Everything You Need to Know About Perth’s FHOG

The First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) is one of the many ways the Western Australian government makes homes more affordable, specifically to first-time buyers. As of 25 September 2013, buyers who fall under this category can be awarded a grant of $10,000 to fund the construction of their new home or a grant of $3,000 to help them purchase an existing property.

These benefits are the biggest reason why certain Perth home builders encourage their clients to apply for the FHOG. That said, the grant also has strict requirements applicants must meet before they can even be considered. For one thing, applicants must use the property they’re building or buying as their principal place of residence. In addition, they must also stay at the property for a continuous period of at least six months and within 12 months after it was bought or constructed.

Then there are the more specific FHOG requirements to consider. Aspiring home owners must be at least 18 years old before they can apply for the grant. In addition, neither they nor their spouses must have received the FHOG from anywhere else in Australia. Finally, applicants can’t use the FHOG to purchase a vacant land or a holiday home, or even fund the construction of a house that will be used for commercial purposes.
